Second Thots

Sometimes one has to step back, take pause, and have some "second thots"

Americans should study Canadian politics

Ivins
Maybe left-wing American columnist Molly Ivins should start studying Canadian politics. If she did, she would understand that the last thing you do to replace a government you think is performing badly is to offer an alternative that will be easy to depict as ideologically narrow. Yet that's exactly what she's proposing as a strategy to defeat the Republicans and George Bush.

John Kerry could have learned from some of our recent elections, where unpopular incumbents won re-election because the alternative was seen as too "scary". Of course, Kerry lost. He didn't learn from people named Manning, Day, or Harper. Even Harper learned from himself. The ideology is different, of course. Yet the strategic factors at play are the same on both sides of the border.

Maybe more Americans should study and learn from our politics. There's more up here than igloos and French accents. I swear.
