It's official: Bob Rae is now a frontrunner, folks

Bob Rae

I think there's some mischief being played with the story that Bob Rae made donations to NDP candidates in recent federal elections. It also serves as proof, especially for those in the Liberal party who refused to believe it until now, that Bob Rae is indeed a frontrunner to become leader of the official opposition. He wouldn't be attacked like this unless he was seen as a threat. Obviously, he's now a threat.

Indeed, I see Rae's donations to NDP candidates as further proof that he is in fact a unity candidate, especially because he also donated to Liberals during this period. Bob Rae is selling himself as someone who can bring progressive Canadians together from both parties, and he has supported both parties recently. Only now he believes the Liberal Party of Canada is the best vehicle to pursue the objective of further bringing Canadian progressives together. I don't see anything wrong with that. I just see opponents trying to make hay out of revelations that are superficially embarrassing to Rae. That's all.

Now, should some loyal Liberals be understandably irked that Rae was flirting with the enemy as recently as the last election? Maybe. But I hardly see it as the sin his opponents are making it out to be. That they choose to quibble over some donations rather than his political record is probably an example of letting the guy off easy. I just don't know if his opponents realize that. But it sure is proof that they think he can win, which is why we're seeing some of these politically motivated attacks.

Pass the popcorn.
