Calls for ceasefire
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan is calling for a ceasefire in Lebanon (photo by AP).
Should there have been calls for a ceasefire at the start of D-Day? What about the Afghanistan war -- one which the UN itself approved? Or the Gulf war? Or any military action deemed as necessary by free democracies?
I don't understand what ceasefires for the sake of ceasefires are supposed to achieve.
The Hezbollah presence in southern Lebanon is clearly a threat to Israel as well as a violation of a UN resolution. If Israel doesn't go in there to root them out, no one will. So why should we be demanding a ceasefire that will only serve the goals of the terrorists in southern Lebanon?
Do we call for ceasefires at the onset of all military actions, even those considered just? Of course not. So why are some mindlessly doing so now?
