Something missing from the Afghanistan debate
With the mission in Afghanistan becoming front-and-centre again as Parliament resumes, there's one thing that even the defenders of the mission forget: we have every right to be in Afghanistan. The country was the chief state sponsor of Al Qaeda at the time of 9/11. It was largely responsible for that attack on an ally. The response to that attack was multilateral and in compliance with all international laws.
Yes, the Afghan people need us. Yes, we should finish the job we started. But we should also demand that 9/11 never happens again. And we do that by ensuring that the Taliban never return to power. It's that simple, and that right. Let's not forget that, please.
